Bitte zu Tisch

2002

installation

Presented at the Staedel Rundgang, Staedelschule Frankfurt, Bitte zu Tisch was presented at the launch of artist/urbanist group SAFT and the SAFT broadsheet.

Taking inspiration from experiments in audio modelling, the table was constructed like a resonant instrument complete with its own loud speakers and light sensors.

The night before the opening event, a ceremonial dinner was held at the table and filmed from above. During the evening hours of the installation, the recording of this feast was projected back onto the table. The patterns of the meal interacted with sensors attached to an audio synthesizer, which in turn fed back into the table's speaker outputs. During daylight hours, visitors were invited to play with the sensors, some of which were mounted flush while others swayed precariously above on spring wire, generating their own tunes.

The work was a 'sticky attractor', particularly in day mode, with some visitors spending very long periods at the table.
